Cell Model Rubric

Description

Are you ready to implement the famous Cell Model Project, but unsure where to start? If so, then this resource is for you.

I’ve included helpful teacher tips to get you started, and multiple versions of a student project description to support you in whatever way you decide to implement this project. (For example, using food or not using food?) A fun extension is included too, just in case the age old cell project is a bit too boring for some of your superstar students.

Additionally, this project comes with a digital version that you can assign using Google Classroom, Canvas, or any other virtual classroom.

By the end of this project, your students are sure to be more proficient in describing the structure and function of cells and their organelles and they’ll have a fun memory of your class that will stick with them a lot longer than the vocabulary will!

The topics covered in this project include:

  • Structure of plant and animal cells
  • Function of common cell organelles

How Can I Use this Resource?

  • In class or at home summative assessment
  • Group work or solo
  • Stations – for independent work or with a co-teacher
  • Differentiation – assign this project as reteaching for students who have yet to show mastery.
  • Extension activity for early finishers or for students who show a special interest in the topic
  • Use as a square on a choice board

What’s Included?

  • Helpful Teacher Tips
  • Project Description Student Copy – in 3 differentiated versions (with food, without food, and an extension idea)
  • Student Form where they describe the function of organelles and how they are represented in their model
  • Rubric (based on a score out of 100 points
  • Digital Version – Purchase includes a printable PDF file in color. On page 2 of this resource you will find a link to a student friendly Google Slide version of this file. You will be able to copy this file and use it with Google Classroom or any other paperless initiative.

NGSS Standards covered by the cell model project:

MS-LS1-2 Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall. Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.
