Earth and Space Science Phenomena Bell Ringers and Warm Ups

Looking for a way to incorporate more scientific wonder this year? Are you struggling to integrate NGSS phenomena based instruction in your daily lessons? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then this earth and space science phenomena resource is for you!

These bell ringer activities are designed to introduce your students to unique life scientific topics. Every Friday, students will be presented with a new video, gif, or image. After studying the phenomenon, they will

  • ask clarifying questions
  • describe what they notice and wonder
  • connect the phenomenon with prior learning and scientific concepts

Topics range from galaxies to continental drift to moon phases to distribution of natural resources. The purpose of these activities is not to have a full understanding of every topic presented, but rather to get students minds engaged and to encourage them to think and ask questions. The questions that accompany the phenomena are designed to be thought provoking and require students to connect and think critically about the ideas being presented.

Who is this resource for?

This resource can be used by classroom teachers, tutors, and parents of students in grades 6-12.

How Can I Use this Earth and Space Science Phenomena  Resource?

  • Use the slides individually as a warm up or closure activity.

Alternative ideas:

  • Extension activity for early finishers or for students who show a special interest
  • Exit tickets
  • Use individual slides as a square on a Choice Board
  • Scavenger hunt – Print slides and hide them around the room for students to find. Great for students who need to be moving!
  • Fishing – Print all the slides and place them in a bowl. Have students come up and “fish” for a new question while throwing their old question back. This is a great activity for students who enjoy being hands on.
  • Sticky Hands – (if you dare) let kids pick cards with sticky hands
  • Have students pull a question answer it correctly to earn privileges like leave for lunch.
