Force, Mass and motion Investigation

Description

I completed this force, mass, and motion investigation with my students virtually. Your purchase will secure both a printable PDF file as well as a link to a Google Slides version of the resource. This product is also compatible with TPT’s Digital Activity initiative.

This resource is aligned with the following NGSS standard:

MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.

This resource is intended to cover 4 days following the plan outlined below:

  • Day 1: Introduce the premise. Investigate freely with materials. Complete the first two pages of the student packet, and the bottom half of the third page.
  • Day 2: Mini lesson on how to write claims and then working with writing claims based on the observations made during the investigate portion. Complete the top of page 3 and the top of page 4.
  • Day 3: Discuss the importance of using evidence to support our claims, and begin brainstorming ways to use the materials on hand to succinctly support the claims the students wrote.
  • Day 4: Mini lesson on how to provide logical and complete reasoning. Complete the final page of the student packet.

I’m focusing on teaching with a much more student centered, investigative, NGSS aligned approach this year. For that reason, I’m only providing one introductory lesson to this investigation covering the basics on force and motion. A little info on mass could be useful as well if your students are not familiar with that term.

A rubric is provided which will assess the students on the following power standards:

  • Developing Models
  • Making Scientific Claims
  • Using Evidence
  • Scientific Reasoning

The only required materials for this resource will be:

  • 2 similarly sized sports balls with different masses (examples are provided and substitutions are very do-able)
  • some kind of device on which they can record/edit (any smart phone, laptop, tablet)

NGSS STANDARDS COVERED BY THIS FORCE, MASS, AND MOTION INVESTIGATION AND CER PROJECT:

NGSSMS-PS2-2
Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. Emphasis is on balanced (Newton’s First Law) and unbalanced forces in a system, qualitative comparisons of forces, mass and changes in motion (Newton’s Second Law), frame of reference, and specification of units. Assessment is limited to forces and changes in motion in one-dimension in an inertial reference frame, and to change in one variable at a time. Assessment does not include the use of trigonometry.
